RV Transport Basics
Learn the RV transport basics right here. Everything you need to know to get started and be a successful contractor.
What are your rates?
Current rates range from $1.70-2.20 per mile and vary based on the trailer GVWR (factory rating) and its destination state. These are subject to change.
How much money can I make?
That depends on how much you drive. We have drivers taking only one load a month and others making 6 figures.
Do I need a CDL?
We prefer contractors possess a Class A CDL, however, it is not mandatory. Check your state’s minimum Non-CDL requirements for the class of license needed to drive commercially.
Do I need a 5th wheel hitch?
In order to drive with Wave, you will need a 5th wheel hitch. Not every unit is a 5th wheel, but it is a requirement for Wave Express drivers.
Do I need my own truck?
Yes, as an independent contractor, you’ll use your own truck and equipment.
What kind of truck do I need?
You’ll need your own 3/4 ton or larger pickup truck. Many drivers opt for the 1 ton dually truck for power and stability.
Can I use an SUV or van?
No, even though some SUVs and vans are capable of pulling an RV, they will not handle the wear and tear that commercial driving will put on the vehicle.
How do I get paid?
Contractors will submit signed legible documents after delivery via our free company mobile app. Payment is loaded onto a company-issued card within 1 business day of receipt.
Does Wave pay tolls?
Round trip tolls are paid for deliveries to Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, New England, Chicago & Northern Illinois, Wisconsin & Minnesota. All other state tolls are paid one way only.
Do you have forced dispatch?
No. Contractors have access to an open load board and a load of their choice.
Do you have Self-Dispatch?
At this time, trailers can be selected through our load board, but are only assigned through personal contact with a Traffic Manager.
What insurance do I need?
In order to transport recreational vehicles, you will need to obtain a $1,000,000 Unladen Insurance Policy to cover liabilities for damage to property, injury, or death when bobtailing. You are responsible to carry your own Property Damage/Liability/Comprehensive/Collision insurance on your vehicle.
Do I stop at weigh stations?
Yes, contractors are expected to read and interpret the scale information sign when approaching weigh stations and decide if they must enter or not. When in doubt, enter the scale.
Can I log off-duty after delivering the trailer?
Unless your vehicle is being carried or towed, you may not log “Off Duty” after delivery. The same FMCSRs apply regardless if you are in transit to another pick up location or to be dispatched, or traveling in the direction of home.
