Summertime is all about fun and games, so with everyone cutting loose, it’s more important than ever to make sure you’re driving defensively on the road. Your safety and the safety of others is the most important part of driving. Here are our 5 tips for safe summer driving.

1. Do a double-take before changing lanes.

As the weather gets warmer, more people want to bask in the sunlight. Motorcyclists are out on the road more frequently, which means it’s crucial to double-check before switching lanes on the interstate. It can be easy to miss a motorcycle in your rearview mirror. Make sure you’re checking your mirrors as well as your blind spot at least twice before moving into another lane.

2. Tailgaters? Just let them go.

Whether they’re heading to a cookout or a pool party, everybody’s in a hurry during the summer. Tailgating is infuriating, and it can be very tempting to retaliate by brake-checking or doing the same to them. However, brake-checking is illegal, and it’s incredibly dangerous to try to fight back at a tailgater. If someone is riding your bumper, just let them pass when they have a chance. It’ll save you and those around you from a potentially fatal accident.

3. Stick to the speed limit.

It’s easy to let the good mood of summer get to your head and forget to keep an eye on your speed. However, driving at high speeds puts both yourself and others in danger. Accidents happen very quickly, and speed limits are in place for a reason. Don’t let a careless mistake jeopardize the rest of your summer fun; maintain a proper speed and arrive at your destination safely.

4. Stay focused on the road.

Amidst the beautiful scenery and text message invitations to outdoor celebrations, summer is full of distractions. Distracted driving is just as dangerous as driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Before your foot presses the gas, put your phone on its “do not disturb” setting and avoid picking it up before you’re safely parked.

5. Always wear your seat belt.

In the event of an accident, your seat belt can truly save your life. No matter how much you do to avoid an accident, sometimes it’s out of your control – but fastening that buckle is completely up to you. Even if you get into a wreck at a low speed, your body can still be thrown forward or to one side. Your seat belt can be life-saving, and it takes very little time to put it on, so take those few seconds to protect yourself on the road.

We here at Wave Express highly recommend keeping these summer driving safety tips in mind as you hit the road this summer. Be careful, drive safely, and enjoy your summer journeys!
